$6 Sushi? In New York, That’s a Death Wish.

Review: Water + Flour (The Specials)

I’ve already established that Water + Flour has New York DNA. The owner is a Lanza, the pizza is fermented properly, and the attitude is right. But then I saw their Specials Menu, and I got suspicious.

In New York, "Specials" usually means one of two things:

  1. The chef is trying to get rid of ingredients that expire tomorrow.

  2. It’s a trap to get you in the door so they can charge you $18 for a cocktail.

But I looked at the deals here, and I have to admit... I’m angry. I’m angry because I’m paying full price back home while you guys are getting away with highway robbery.

Water Wednesday: The $6 Sushi Risk

Let’s start with the big one. Water Wednesday.

$6 Sushi Rolls.

$6.

Do you know what $6 sushi gets you in Manhattan? It gets you a roll from a Duane Reade drugstore and a 50/50 chance of meeting your maker.

But here? It’s the real deal. It’s the spicy tuna, the tempura shrimp, the actual fresh fish I raved about in my last review.

They run this from 3:00 PM to Close.

Again with the 3 PM start time? Does anyone in this city work a 9-to-5? Or do you all just clock out after lunch to eat discount sashimi?

Either way, the place is a zoo on Wednesdays, and for good reason. You can eat like a king for the price of a MetroCard.

Taco Tuesday: The $3 Miracle

Then there’s Taco Tuesday.

Look, every bar with a lime and a bottle of tequila does "Taco Tuesday." It’s usually a sad, soggy tortilla with some ground beef that tastes like despair.

Water + Flour offers $3 Tacos.

And because they’re related to Taco Dirty and Green Lemon (the monopoly continues), the tacos are actually legit.

$3? You can’t even buy a pack of gum for $3 anymore.

And yes, there are Drink Specials too. Because obviously, you need a margarita to wash down your financial victory.

Weekend Brunch: The "Dine-In" Rule

Saturday & Sunday until 3 PM.

Standard brunch hours. But notice the fine print on all of these specials:

DINE IN ONLY.

I respect this.

They’re saying, "Look, we’ll give you the cheap sushi and the cheap tacos, but you have to actually come here and hang out with us." You can’t order the $3 tacos from your couch while binge-watching Netflix. You have to put on pants.

It keeps the vibe alive. It keeps the place buzzing.

The Verdict

Water + Flour isn't just relying on its "New York roots" to charge premium prices. They’re throwing the neighborhood a bone.

Water Wednesday is arguably the best deal on South Howard. Just get there early, or you’ll be waiting outside in the humidity, watching people inside eat your $6 Spicy Tuna Roll.

Rating: 9.2/10 (I’m still suspicious of $6 sushi, but I ate it, and I’m still alive, so... 5 stars).
